The National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) was signed into law in 1970, and the Location and Environment Bureau (LEB) helps to ensure that the Iowa Department of Transportation (Iowa DOT) follows the NEPA process during planning and project delivery.

The NEPA Team:
This position will help support the Iowa DOT with avoiding, minimizing, or mitigating for environmental impacts due to federal-aid transportation projects. This position will help aid a four-person team that makes up the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) Compliance Section of LEB. This team is responsible for a variety of tasks associated with the planning and preparation of environmental documents.
As a NEPA co-op, your duties will include, but are not limited to:
- Helping to prepare technical reports and documents;
- analyzing transportation designs to determine project limits and potential impacts;
- working with city and county project applicants;
- coordinating with internal Iowa DOT sections and resource/regulatory agencies;
- representing the bureau in project management teams.

Eligible majors: engineering
Engineering Co-op:
Completion of at least two years in civil, construction, materials, or transportation engineering, or in an engineering management curriculum at an accredited four-year college or university with eligibility for junior status upon return to school.
Salary- $18.81
Work Hours: Days, M-F; 40 hours a week, teleworking and flextime available
Location: Ames, Iowa
Travel: This position may require some in-state travel, but it is not mandatory.
