Position overview:
This Intern position is with the Traffic & Safety Bureau within the Safety Engineering & Planning Section. The individuals selected will work on traffic safety engineering projects, which may include conducting traffic safety data analysis or reviewing construction plans for work zone standards. Additional tasks may include, but are not limited to, mining crash and roadway databases, attending project meetings, participating in project field reviews, and drafting associated white papers. Other tasks may include GIS integration work or presentation preparation as needed.
Possible work tasks:
- Investigate existing highway conditions
- Tabulating project quantities and developing project estimates
- Compiling analysis details from existing databases
- Query, review video footage of traffic events
- Retrieve and analyze Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) sensor data
- Perform traffic analysis
- Conduct safety feature review
- Using ArcGIS to map safety features
- Conducting digital and paper document research
- Working with the GIS team to document and maintain records
- Review/Develop project plans using Microstation CADD
Preferred background:
- Interest in working with ArcGIS, Microsoft Office, Oracle Spatial Database, and/or Microstation
- Interest in learning traffic safety engineering, spatial data processing, thematic mapping
- Good communication and organizational skills
- Ability to work independently as well as on a team

Requirements: Completion of at least two years in engineering at an accredited four-year college or university with eligibility for junior status upon return to school.
Duration: May-August; 40 hours/week
