This Intern position is with the Office of Traffic & Safety within the Safety Engineering Section.  The individuals selected will work on traffic safety engineering projects, which may include developing construction plans for safety countermeasure projects or reviewing construction plans for work zone improvements.  Additional tasks may include, but are not limited to: mining crash and roadway databases, conducting traffic safety data analysis, attending project meetings, participating in project field reviews, and drafting associated white papers.  Other tasks may include GIS integration work or presentation preparation as needed.

Possible work tasks:

  • Investigate existing highway conditions
  • Review/Develop project plans using Microstation CADD
  • Tabulating project quantities and developing project estimates
  • Compiling analysis details from existing databases
  • Query, review video footage of traffic events
  • Retrieve and analyze Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) sensor data
  • Perform traffic analysis
  • Conduct safety feature review
  • Using ArcGIS to map safety features
  • Conducting digital and paper document research
  • Working with the GIS team to document and maintain records

Preferred background:

  • Interest in working with ArcGIS, Microsoft Office, Oracle Spatial Database, and/or Microstation
  • Interest in learning safety engineering, utility engineering, spatial data processing, thematic mapping, and database management
  • Good communication and organizational skills
  • Ability to work independently as well as on a team

Other Requirements: Completion of at least two years in civil, construction, or transportation engineering at an accredited four year college or university with eligibility for junior status upon return to school.

Duration: May-August (40 hr/week) with possibility transitioning to part-time hours (20 hr/wk) in the fall if student remains eligible; course of study remains relevant to the work or student does not complete course of study.

Salary $18.06/hour
