Job description:

90% of the work duties described below takes place in the outdoors in all seasons. All of the work performed in the field is affected by weather conditions. Extreme heat and cold with possibly dangerous wind chills can have an effect on the operation and accuracy of the equipment as well as the attitude and performance of the personnel. High traffic, vehicle speed, noise, and varying terrain all contribute to the difficult aspects of the job.

 

Essential Functions:

Assists survey party chief by collecting and mapping topographic data.

Maintains a valid Class C Non-Commercial Operators License.

Operates GPS, total station and other remote sensing survey equipment to determine positional data.

Records topographic field data using a data collector (field computer).

Operates and maintains a DOT survey vehicle.

Travels statewide for typically 4 days per week.

Surveys outdoors year around in all weather conditions.

Walks on uneven ground and rugged terrain.

Communicates with general public to explain surveying tasks and project surveying requirements.

Compiles accurate records of all survey data collected.

Communicates effectively in the English language.

Applies Iowa DOT policies and specifications relating to survey projects.

Analyzes survey data using mathematics.

 

Duration: May-August

40 hours/week

Eligible majors: Construction technology or similar program at 2 year college

Salary starting at $14.41/hr.

Requirements: The position is only applicable to 2-year community college students whose course of study relates to the position duties. (Civil Engineering Technology, Pre-Engineering or Construction Engineering Technology).  Engineering students who attend a 4-year university should apply under Engineering internship postings.
