Pay Rate: $14.05, Up to Full-time (Up to 40 hours per week) Full time Co-op rotation desired; 40 hours/week, May – December 2016. (We will consider student who can work full time during the summer & part time in fall. Summer-only will be considered on a case-by-case basis.)

Location: Iowa Department of Transportation Office, Iowa DOT Library, Ames, Iowa

Description: The Iowa Department of Transportation Library is looking to hire a student interested in Special Librarianship to help us modernize our collection and collection management. While working at the Iowa DOT Library the student will have the opportunity to:

  • Learn how digitize print documents to long-term preservation standards;
  • Learn how to add metadata to digitized documents to be ingested into our digital repository;
  • Continue to improve electronic information services;
  • Learn more about managing research data sets;
  • Assist the Iowa DOT Library in making research datasets and publications available to the public;
  • Learn about the breadth of transportation and civil engineering information resources available to transportation agencies and researchers;
  • Learn how to more efficiently search these resources using custom-built and general search tools;
  • Participate in transportation research projects by performing literature searches under the guidance of the Iowa DOT Librarian;
  • Assist as the Iowa DOT Library transitions to modern library collection management tools, including open source online cataloging software, barcoding the print collection, and digitizing Iowa DOT-produced materials;
  • Participate in collection management by accessioning and de-accessioning transportation information resources and publications;
  • Learn to catalog transportation information resources in online catalogs, including OCLC and Koha;
  • Participate in transportation librarian and information committees by attending virtual meetings;
  • Interact with patrons by answering reference questions;
  • Lead outreach efforts.

The student will also gain valuable career skills, including project management, customer service, social media, marketing, and library operations and management.

The ideal candidate will have most or many of these qualities or skills:

  • Be able to work at the Iowa DOT up to fulltime from May to December 2016. (Full-time is preferred, but a part-time position may be negotiated.);
  • Have some Library and Information Science course work, or the desire to obtain that experience;
  • Experience using social media and conventional media to publicize services and events;
  • Have basic office productivity skills and the ability to learn new software applications quickly;
  • Be able to work well independently.
